Karee Tree Trimming Over a Roof in Hyde Park, Sandton.
Karee Tree Trimming Over a Roof in Hyde Park, Sandton
Trees are an important part of the landscape in established Johannesburg suburbs, providing shade, privacy and character to residential properties. However, as trees mature, branches can extend over roofs, walls, driveways and other parts of a property where they may eventually become a concern.
Recently, Trade And Home Solutions Pty Ltd carried out a Karee tree trimming project in Hyde Park, Sandton, where branches from a mature tree were overhanging the client's roof.

Professional Tree Trimming in Hyde Park
The location of the branches meant that simply cutting them from the ground was not an appropriate solution. The work required a climber to access the tree using a harness and ropes and carefully work through the canopy.
The climber was able to reach the overhanging sections and remove the required branches in controlled sections.
This type of tree work is particularly important when branches are positioned directly above a roof or close to other structures. A large branch allowed to fall uncontrolled can damage roof tiles, gutters, walls, fences, vehicles and other property.
Why Rope Access Is Used for Difficult Tree Work
When tree branches are difficult to reach from the ground, a trained tree climber can use climbing equipment to work safely within the canopy.
Harnesses, ropes and controlled cutting techniques allow branches to be managed more carefully, particularly when there is a building directly below the work area.
For residential properties in suburbs such as Hyde Park, Sandton, Bryanston and surrounding Johannesburg areas, this can be an important consideration because mature trees are often growing close to houses, boundary walls, pools, driveways and other structures.
Trimming Overhanging Branches Before They Become a Bigger Problem
Branches growing over a roof do not necessarily mean that the entire tree needs to be removed.
In many situations, selective pruning or trimming can address the immediate problem while retaining the tree and much of its canopy.
The Karee, scientifically known as Searsia lancea, is a hardy indigenous South African tree valued for its evergreen foliage, shade and adaptability. It is also commonly used in urban landscapes.
Regular inspection and appropriate pruning can help maintain the tree's structure while keeping branches away from buildings and other areas where they could cause problems.
Careful Tree Trimming Around Residential Property
Tree work around a home requires more than simply cutting branches.
Before removing an overhanging branch, consideration needs to be given to:
The position and weight of the branch
The direction in which it could fall
The roof and structures underneath it
Other branches surrounding the cutting area
Boundary walls and fences
Access to the property
The safest way to lower or control the removed sections
In this Hyde Park project, the climber worked from within the tree using ropes and climbing equipment to reach the overhanging branches above the client's roof.
