Many people claim they “cut trees” or operate in the tree-felling business. The reality is that professional tree felling is a highly broad trade, with different operators working in very different niches.
Some contractors only can remove some Syringa tree or Witstinkhout from an open garden, or rope down a Jacaranda branch over a driveway. Thus routine tree felling.
Professional tree felling is not necessarily defined by the size of the tree alone, but also by where the tree is located, what surrounds it, and what is at risk.
In suburbs such as Houghton, Craighall Park, Parktown, and Hyde Park, properties often contain massive English Oaks, London Plane trees, Liquid Ambers, and Pin Oaks. These trees can exceed 1.2 metres in diameter and over 30 metres in height, dominating entire properties. Branches frequently extend over houses, carports, outbuildings, water features, electric fencing, fibre lines, and expensive paving.
On high-end properties, ground space is extremely limited—often leaving barely enough room to maneuvre a wheelbarrow. Large branches must be carefully sectionalised and lowered using ropes, with no margin for error.
Landing zones are minimal or non-existent. Every section must be guided past roofs, gates, walls, and landscaping. Even after the tree canopy is removed, the most dangerous phase remains: slicing the main stem…
Oak timber is exceptionally hard and heavy. Even with sharp chains and impact-absorption beds made from branches, trunk sections can punch through, roll unexpectedly, or cause serious damage if not controlled precisely.
These are high-risk, technically demanding tree-felling jobs.
We regularly undertake tree-felling projects that other experienced contractors refuse. At the same time, we do not proceed unless clients fully understand what is involved. These jobs require discipline, experience, and complete focus. They can be traumatic to the crew.
During some complex removals, our teams work in near silence—communicating only for rigging and rope control. There is no room for distractions, spectators, or casual behaviour. One mistake can be catastrophic. Most people cant even stand and watch, quite scary, not entertaining at all.
These are the jobs that stay with you long after they are finished. They separate boys from men.
