Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: A Colour-Changing Beauty for Johannesburg Gardens.
Updated: Oct 1
The Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow plant (Brunfelsia pauciflora) is a popular ornamental shrub known for its fragrant flowers that change colour over three days. Originally from Brazil, this attractive shrub brings a beautiful display of purple, lavender and white flowers to South African gardens.
Why Is It Called Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow?
The plant gets its memorable name from the gradual colour transformation of its flowers:
Yesterday: Newly opened flowers display a deep purple or violet colour.
Today: The flowers gradually fade to a softer lavender or lilac shade.
Tomorrow: The older flowers turn almost white before eventually fading away.
As new flowers open and older blooms change colour, the shrub displays all three shades simultaneously, creating a beautiful multi-coloured effect.
Growing Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow in Johannesburg
This flowering shrub can grow to approximately 2.4 metres tall, making it suitable for garden beds, sheltered borders and ornamental planting around patios.
For successful growth in Johannesburg gardens:
Light: Partial shade or gentle morning sunlight is generally suitable.
Soil: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the plant establishes itself.
Pruning: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth.
Flowering: The main floral display generally occurs during spring and summer, depending on local growing conditions.
