Bloodleaf (Iresine herbstii) – A Splash of Red for the Garden
Iresine herbstii, commonly known as Bloodleaf or Herbst’s Bloodleaf, is a striking foliage plant from Brazil and a member of the Amaranthaceae family. It is grown primarily for its richly coloured leaves, which can range from deep burgundy and red to pink and purple, depending on the variety.
The fleshy stems are generally upright and branching, although some forms can develop a more spreading habit. Its rounded, oval or heart-shaped leaves are often enhanced by contrasting veins, giving the plant an attractive patterned appearance.

A Bold Garden Colour
Bloodleaf is particularly useful where a garden needs strong colour and contrast. Its red and purple foliage stands out against green plants and works well in garden beds, borders, containers and layered landscape designs.
It can be used as a feature plant, planted in groups for greater impact, or combined with green foliage plants to create contrast and depth.
Easy to Propagate
One of the useful characteristics of Iresine herbstii is how easily it can be propagated from stem cuttings. Cuttings can readily develop roots in water before being planted into suitable growing medium.
With its colourful foliage, relatively easy propagation and strong visual presence, Bloodleaf is an interesting option for adding year-round foliage colour to suitable gardens.
