Ligustrum lucidum (Glossy Privet)

( Asian Origin - China & Korea )

OverviewGlossy privet is a fast-growing, evergreen tree or large shrub that can reach up to 12 m. It has dense, rounded growth with thick, shiny dark green leaves. In summer, it produces large clusters of strongly scented white flowers, followed by abundant purple-black berries that are readily eaten and dispersed by birds.

Why It Became Popular

  • Rapid growth and quick screening

  • Dense foliage ideal for hedges and windbreaks

  • Tolerant of pruning and shaping

  • Attractive glossy leaves

These traits made it widely planted in gardens, estates, and along streets.

Invasive Status in South Africa

  • Listed as a Category 1b invasive species under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEMBA).

  • Legal obligation: Must be removed and destroyed.

  • Prohibited activities: It may not be planted, sold, propagated, or transported.

Category 1b species are invasive plants that require compulsory control as they pose serious environmental threats.

Environmental Impact

Glossy privet is classified as a habitat transformer, meaning it significantly alters ecosystems:

  • Forms dense thickets that block sunlight.

  • Suppresses and replaces indigenous vegetation.

  • Reduces biodiversity.

  • Alters soil chemistry over time.

  • Spreads aggressively into natural areas via bird-dispersed berries.

Infestations commonly occur along riverbanks, forest margins, roadsides, and disturbed land, where it outcompetes local species.

Control and Removal

Effective management generally includes:

  • Mechanical removal (cutting and uprooting).

  • Chemical treatment of stumps to prevent regrowth.

  • Follow-up monitoring to control seedlings.

Removal must be done responsibly to prevent further spread.

Recommendation for Landscapes

Where screening or hedging is required, it is strongly advisable to replace glossy privet with indigenous, non-invasive alternatives suited to the local biome.

If you’d like, I can suggest suitable indigenous hedge or screening replacements specific to your region in South Africa.
