Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii)
The Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii) is widely grown in South Africa for its fast growth and valuable timber. Introduced from the United States, it thrives in plantation settings and plays a major role in the forestry industry.

But outside controlled environments, it becomes a problem. Classified as a Category 2 invasive species, it spreads easily into natural areas, where it shades out indigenous plants and alters soil conditions.
While it may look appealing, it’s not suited for gardens or eco-sensitive landscapes. The shift today is toward indigenous trees that support biodiversity and long-term sustainability.
Slash Pine may be great for timber—but in the landscape, it’s often more risk than reward.
