Nandina domestica "Standard" - Heavenly Bamboo
This article refers specifically to the standard, taller form of Nandina domestica, not the dwarf cultivar ‘Pygmaea’.

Nandina domestica, commonly known as Heavenly Bamboo, Sacred Bamboo or Nandina, is an elegant, upright evergreen shrub valued for its fine foliage, seasonal colour, delicate white flowers and clusters of bright red berries.
Despite its common name, Nandina is not a true bamboo. It belongs to the barberry family (Berberidaceae) and grows as an upright, multi-stemmed shrub.
The standard form typically reaches around 1.2–2 metres tall, with a spread of approximately 0.6–1.2 metres, making it considerably taller and more substantial than dwarf forms. Its upright habit makes it particularly useful for borders, mixed shrub beds, planting around larger garden areas and informal screening.
Seasonal Foliage:
One of the main attractions of the standard Nandina is its changing foliage. New leaves can emerge with copper, pinkish or purplish tones before developing into green foliage. During the cooler months, established plants can develop attractive shades of red, bronze and purple.
Small white flowers are produced in upright clusters in late spring and early summer. These are followed by clusters of bright red berries, which can remain on the plant into winter.
Growing Conditions:
Nandina domestica is adaptable and relatively easy to maintain once established. It grows well in full sun to partial shade, with more sunlight generally encouraging stronger seasonal red colouring.
It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and benefits from regular watering while establishing. Once established, it has good drought tolerance.
Pruning and Maintenance:
The standard Nandina usually requires little pruning. Older plants can sometimes become woody or sparse at the base. Removing some of the oldest stems down to ground level in late winter can encourage fresh growth and help maintain a fuller appearance.
Nandina can also spread gradually through underground shoots, so unwanted growth can be removed when necessary.

An Important Note About the Berries
The bright red berries are an attractive feature, but they contain cyanogenic compounds and can be toxic if consumed in sufficient quantities.
Nandina domestica in South African Gardens
The standard Nandina domestica is a versatile ornamental shrub that can add structure, fine-textured foliage and seasonal colour to suitable South African gardens.
Its upright growth makes the standard form particularly useful where a taller shrub is required rather than a low-growing groundcover or dwarf planting.
